Selecting Non-Toxic Cleaning Products for your Home

Changing to nontoxic cleaning products may have crossed your mind several times but you never got around to making this change in your home. Although selecting non-toxic cleaning products can seem overwhelming at times, it is definitely worth it to make your house safe for you and your family.  Since a lot of us are overwhelmed by our day to day tasks, such as cleaning and managing the household, adding this to our never ending list of things to do is the challenge. This “how to” post will allow you to identify and solidify the reasons why it’s important to make the switch to your household by removing the toxic products that lay within it.  There are a lot of great non-toxic products that I’ve found at the Honest Company, and if you read Honest Co. reviews, it will help you decide if that is a company that you’re interested in using to make the switch.

Identify your “Why”: Why have you been considering non toxic cleaning products? There can be lots of reasons…maybe because you child has allergies and you don’t know what is causing those allergies, maybe because you have animals in the house and you’re afraid they might be accidentally poisoned, maybe because you want to increase the air quality within your home, maybe you want to reduce your personal exposure to toxic substances, or maybe because you simply want to protect the environment and your family.  Either way, for whatever reason you are wanting to make the change, it is important for you to know that making this change is a step in the right directions for you and your family.  Making this change won’t have any negative setbacks, it is only making your be more green and clean for everyone around you.

Get enlightened: You must understand what compounds are toxic in order to ensure your new cleansers do not include any of them. Here is a brief list of dangerous ingredients you should stay away from: formaldehyde, bleach, ammonia, phosphates, phthalates, triclosan, perchloroethylene, and man-made scents. Manufacturing companies are mandated to record all their ingredients, and that’s why this approach is really powerful.  Even though you might find a product that says it is non-toxic, or “green”, you still need to do your due-diligence to make sure non of these chemicals are used.  It might take a while to educate yourself on these chemicals, but it will be worth your time and effort if you do take your time doing the necessary research.   If you’d like to try some non-toxic soap, try this triclosan free lavender soap from The Honest Company.  This is one of the first products that I tried from them, and I really like it.  It has a nice scent to it and it’s not a heavy, lathery soap.  You know that it’s doing its job without being overwhelmingly foamy.

Understand how much you will be willing to invest: If you’ve got an infinite budget but very little time, it’s completely different than having no money but lots of free time. If money isn’t an issue, you should buy your non toxic cleaning products at a natural store, such as Natural Grocers or The Honest Company. I’ve purchased from both places and regardless of where you go, you are going to spend a bit more money for products that are natural and non-toxic.  Once you’ve found a store or website to purchase these green cleaners from, look even further to see if they have concentrated bottles of the cleaner.  This will typically save you more money since you will be adding the water to the mixture yourself, and you are saving on shipping costs since they aren’t shipping the water for you.  Also, with concentrated bottles of cleaners, you are saving the company the number of bottles that they need to produce since you’re concentration (lets say 6x concentrated), is saving them 5 bottles.  Now, if money is an issue for you, but you have plenty of time on your hands, then making your own cleansers might be the option for you.  I’ve included a YouTube video below of how to make your own cleaners if you fall into this scenario.
